If your business has a Purpose it should count.

You and your senior team may have spent time and effort thinking about Purpose and even coming up with a very inspiring Purpose Statement full of aspirations about what you want your business to be about. But after all that effort does it count for anything when you get back to the day job or stay safely on the walls of reception and in your marketing literature?

 

  1. Do the people you want to live that purpose know and care what it is or even know how they are supposed to make it happen?
  2. If they know and are inspired to deliver it have they got the tools they need to work together in achieving it?
  3. Is the way that you communicate that purpose to your clients joined up so that it informs your conversation with them?
  4. How do you apply what you have found out from those conversations that help you deliver that purpose in a way that delivers value to them and to your business?
  5. In what way is this delivery of purpose reflected in your accounts and they way that you navigate your business through each year?
  6. How does this help you to reflect on the way that you can best use your resources to deliver your purpose in a way which maximises the value you deliver to all your stakeholders?
  7. Will you wait a whole year before you think about your Purpose again or will it be your guiding North Star?

The problem with most Purpose Statements is that there is no practical way of monitoring whether you are working towards them or measuring their achievement.
